2012 NEWS AND EVENTS

2nd August The annual Marloes and St Brides Church Fete was held on the afternoon of 2nd August on the lawn on front of St Brides Castle, and despite a showery forecast, the sun shone for us all afternoon! As usual a good time was had by all and a sizeable quantity of money was raised for the Churches.

And an update on the Glossy Ibises (see below) there are still one or two birds around at Marloes Mere from time to time.

June 2nd and 4th Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. For more photos see Mark Burton’s slide show

9th March The three Glossy Ibises are still in the Marloes area - they can be seen flying in to roost at Marloes Mere each evening. They are not often seen during the day but on occasion they return to the field by the sewage works where they were first seen. Read this article from PP for more information.

8th March Have you noticed that Castle Rag (the lane that leads from  the Martins Haven road to the NT car park) has been tarmacced? This is good news for those of use who prefer to use this route rather then run the gauntlet of the narrow lane from the Church.

There is also a new set of steps down to Marloes Sands.

2011 NEWS AND EVENTS

September 26th - 29th A great time was had by many residents watching the antics of the the film crew as they took over Marloes Beach for the filming of “Snow White and the Huntsman”. A great deal of setting up beforehand and clearing up afterwards was involved but it all seemed to go very smoothly with little inconvenience to residents and holidaymakers. See HERE for some idea of what went on!

August Channel 4’s “Time Team” visited in August in order to carry out a dig on Gateholm and also on the nearby hill fort. A zipwire was established to carry the archaeologists, film crews etc across to the islands. The program was broadcast in January. The results were somewhat inconclusive though it was clear that the island had ben inhabited by a significant number of people over a long period of time - a dig report can be read here.

New Play Facilities for Marloes

Friday 21st September saw the opening ceremony for the new recreation facilities in the centre of Marloes village.  The children of the village were out in force to try out the new equipment while parents and onlookers enjoyed tea and delicious cakes; the event was greatly enjoyed by all. The park was officially opened by Mr and Mrs Keeble of Marloes who have been very generous and supportive of the project.

The new equipment was funded by grants from Big Lottery, Pembrokeshire County Council Regeneration Unit, and the Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services.  However, it would not have been possible to secure the grants without generous donations from local benefactors and Dark Mirror Films on behalf of Universal Pictures (who filmed part of “Snow White and the Huntsman” on Marloes Sands in 2011).

Over £20,000 worth of new benches and play equipment have given a new lease of life to the Marloes Recreation Area, and joined some existing swings on land purchased by the Marloes Recreational Area Committee in 1999-2001.  There are new benches made from recycled plastic including one inlaid with chess and snakes & ladders games (supplied by Birch Farm Plastic Collection Ltd).  The play equipment was supplied and fitted by PlayDale Playgrounds Ltd and includes a team swing which can also be enjoyed by the disabled.  To top it off there is a mini soccer pitch.

This has taken 2 years to complete but should now provide Marloes with a fun packed recreation area for many years to come. We obviously need to thank all our funders but the biggest thanks should go to all the generous volunteers from the local community who have given their time and money to make the plan become a reality.  It is these people who will make sure that the area remains a vibrant facility for the community and the visitors to our beautiful village
